“Uzbekistan: Heritage in Motion” Exhibition to Open in Doha

The “Uzbekistan: Heritage in Motion” exhibition will open at the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha on September 3, 2026, presenting the history and cultural heritage of Uzbekistan. The exhibition will trace the country’s heritage from the period preceding the spread of Islam in Central Asia to the present day and will remain open through November 28.
The project is being organized by the Art and Culture Development Foundation of Uzbekistan in partnership with the Museum of Islamic Art. It will be the first international exhibition in three decades to present the history of Uzbekistan through the formation of its contemporary cultural identity.
The exhibition will bring together objects from leading museums and cultural institutions in Qatar and Uzbekistan. Highlights include the renowned Afrasiab mural, the Katta Langar Quran, rare manuscripts from the Institute of Oriental Studies, Bukhara ceramics, 19th–20th century national costumes, jewelry, silk textiles and works of traditional craftsmanship.
The exhibition is structured around four thematic sections covering the ancient history of the region, architectural heritage, the intellectual achievements of Islamic civilization and the development of traditional crafts. Particular attention is given to Uzbekistan’s historical role as a major center of science, culture and artistic production in the Islamic world, as well as to the legacy of the Samanid and Timurid eras.
Historical heritage is presented alongside contemporary cultural development, highlighting the continuity of Uzbekistan’s traditions in decorative arts, textiles and jewelry-making.
The public program will feature lectures, workshops, demonstrations of traditional crafts and presentations on ikat art and silk production. From September 3 to 16, artist Davlat Toshev will lead a series of workshops on Eastern miniature painting and the “Abru-Bahor” technique for local artists and exhibition visitors as part of an artist residency program. Advance registration will be required.
Established in 2017, the Art and Culture Development Foundation of Uzbekistan works to preserve and promote the country’s cultural heritage. The Foundation has implemented international projects in more than 17 countries and collaborated with more than 40 international cultural institutions.
The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha was established in 2008. Its collection spans around 1,300 years of Islamic art history and includes manuscripts, ceramics, metal and glass objects, textiles, carpets and jewelry.
