Cash Era Ends in Tashkent Public Transport — Transition to Electronic Payments is Necessary
Uzbekistan
Starting January 1, 2024, according to a decree by the Tashkent city mayor, public transport fares will increase to 3000 UZS when paying with cash (current fare — 2000 UZS).
However, the fare for digital payment methods, including transport cards, bank cards, and mobile apps, will remain unchanged at 1700 UZS.
These changes aim to encourage residents to adopt modern payment systems.
As per the decision, from January 1, 2024, cash payments will no longer be accepted in all types of public transport. Passengers will only be able to pay using electronic methods.
If a passenger cannot use electronic payment methods, they will be required to purchase a single-use ticket at special kiosks (Paynet, MultiPay, Oson) installed at stops.
The decision also approved multi-ride fare plans for bus routes based on the number of trips:
10-ride fare: 16,000 UZS for 2 days.
20-ride fare: 30,000 UZS for 5 days.
30-ride fare: 44,000 UZS for 7 days.
How will Tashkent residents react to the new system? Time will tell. However, the goal is clear: to create a convenient, safe, and efficient public transport system.
