Uzbekistan to End Cash Payments on Buses Starting 2025
Uzbekistan
From January 1, 2025, passengers on buses in Uzbekistan will no longer be able to pay with cash. This was announced by Minister of Transport Ilhom Mahkamov.
According to the minister, passengers will be able to purchase tickets or QR codes at station terminals. This system is currently being tested in Tashkent, and all buses will be equipped with devices capable of reading QR codes. As a result, conductors will no longer be needed once the system is fully operational.
Mahkamov also shared plans for a major upgrade of public transport in Uzbekistan. The country is set to receive 1,294 new buses soon, with a priority on electric buses that will be deployed in Tashkent and Samarkand. By 2030, the fleet is expected to grow to 5,000 buses, with 2,000 of them being electric.
In addition to upgrading the fleet, modern technologies are being actively introduced. Dedicated bus lanes are being created in major cities, and dispatcher control systems are being developed to make public transport more efficient and convenient for passengers.
