Central Asian States Establish Contact Group on Afghanistan

On August 26, the first meeting of special representatives of the Presidents of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan was held in Tashkent, where the countries agreed to establish a Central Asian Contact Group on Afghanistan.

The group will serve as an independent regional platform for regular and focused dialogue on issues of shared interest regarding Afghanistan.

Participants emphasized the importance of developing a balanced and independent regional approach to Afghanistan, considering the historical, cultural, and economic ties between Central Asia and Afghanistan, as well as the shared interest in stability, security, and sustainable development.

The sides confirmed their readiness to enhance cooperation in regional security, including the fight against terrorism, extremism, transnational crime, and drug trafficking. They also underlined the need to restore and expand trade, transport, and humanitarian ties with Afghanistan.

It was agreed to hold regular meetings of the contact group, including within the framework of Consultative Meetings of the Heads of Central Asian States.
