Colombian President Gustavo Petro issued a sharp response to threats from the United States, saying he could resort to armed resistance if necessary.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro has said he is prepared to take up arms again following threats from the United States. He made the statement in a post on the social media platform X.
According to Petro, any attempt to detain a president supported by a significant part of the population could unleash widespread popular resistance. He noted that he vowed never to use weapons again after signing a peace agreement in 1989, but said he may be forced to break that vow in defense of his country.
Petro also said that all Colombian soldiers have received orders stating that any security commander who places the US flag above Colombia’s national interests will be immediately dismissed. He called on citizens to protect the president from any illegal acts of violence and urged people to take control at the municipal level.
He added that security forces have been instructed to use force not against civilians, but against potential invaders. In addition, Petro ordered the dismissal of several senior police intelligence officers, accusing them of spreading false information aimed against the state.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump accused Gustavo Petro of involvement in cocaine production and did not rule out launching an operation against him.
