The death toll from the two devastating earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 that struck Venezuela on June 24 continues to rise rapidly. According to an official statement by the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, the number of fatalities has now reached 1,450. Additionally, 3,150 people sustained injuries of varying severity, and over 12,721 citizens were forced to evacuate their homes due to critical infrastructural damage. International media outlets report that the seismic event completely leveled 774 buildings.
A large-scale search and rescue operation is underway in the affected regions, involving more than 2,600 foreign specialists. Emergency crews have successfully pulled 33 survivors, including several children, alive from the debris. However, the situation remains critical: according to European news agencies, the fate of approximately 68,000 people who are still listed as missing remains unknown. United Nations experts have conducted an initial assessment of the material damage, estimating the economic losses at no less than 6.7 billion dollars, which will necessitate long-term international assistance to rebuild the country's economy.
