Donald Trump Decides to Hold Inauguration Inside the Capitol
World
On January 20, 2025, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump decided to hold his inauguration ceremony inside the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. This decision was made due to adverse weather conditions. Trump announced this on January 17 in a post on the social media platform TruthSocial.
On January 20, Washington is expected to experience Arctic winds and record-low temperatures. According to the meteorological service, daytime temperatures will hover around -5°C (23°F), dropping to -12°C (10°F) at night. The president-elect noted that such weather conditions could pose a danger to emergency workers, ceremony participants, and spectators.
“I don’t want anyone to be harmed or injured. That’s why I decided to deliver the inaugural address and hold other ceremonies in the Capitol Rotunda,” Trump wrote.
The Capitol Rotunda can accommodate a few hundred people. Consequently, a live broadcast of the ceremony will be organized for Trump’s supporters at the Capital One Arena in Washington. The president-elect also mentioned that he plans to visit the stadium to meet his supporters after taking office.
Earlier, thousands of chairs had already been set up on the National Mall near the Capitol steps, but due to the weather, they will no longer be needed.
In the United States, presidential inaugurations are typically held outdoors in front of the Capitol building. Trump’s first inauguration in 2017 also took place in that location. Recalling that event, Trump noted that Ronald Reagan’s 1985 inauguration was moved to the Capitol Rotunda due to cold weather.
AFP reminds us that the ninth U.S. president, William Henry Harrison, delivered a long speech in 1841 in cold, windy conditions without a hat or coat. This negatively affected his health, and he died of pneumonia a month later.
