On August 18, U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will hold talks in Washington with the participation of French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

The German government described the meeting as a continuation of consultations following the U.S.–Russia summit in Alaska, where Trump and Vladimir Putin reported progress in their discussions. Chancellor Merz plans to highlight Germany’s commitment to achieving a peace deal as soon as possible.

Talks will focus on security guarantees, territorial arrangements, support for Ukraine’s defense, and maintaining sanctions pressure on Russia. Finnish President Alexander Stubb referred to the gathering as “peace negotiations on Ukraine.”

European leaders stressed their intent to support Zelensky at this crucial diplomatic juncture and to prevent pressure on Kyiv to accept a settlement favorable to Moscow.

According to the White House, Trump and Zelensky will meet at 1:15 p.m. (ET) in the Oval Office, followed by broader talks with European leaders at 3:00 p.m. in the East Room.
