Ex-South Korean PM Sentenced to 23 Years Over Martial Law
Seoul Central District Court sentenced former Prime Minister Han Duck Soo to 23 years in prison. He was found guilty of assisting former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who declared martial law in December 2024.

Han Duck Soo was also convicted of forging the martial law decree, which was signed three days after the attempt to legitimize the president’s actions. The former PM was further accused of giving false testimony during Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment trial, where the president claimed he was unaware of the decree.

Han Duck Soo denies all charges, claiming he did not know in advance about the martial law plans.

In December 2024, Yoon Suk Yeol accused the opposition of working for North Korea and briefly declared martial law. Military forces blocked the parliament, but 190 lawmakers managed to enter the building and vote against the decree. The president then canceled the order and apologized.

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol now also faces charges in the same case, with prosecutors recently requesting the death penalty.
