Former French president sentenced to reduced jail term

An appeals court in Paris has commuted the sentence of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy in his 2012 campaign finance case, reducing his prison term to 6 months, France 24 reports.
In 2021, Sarkozy was sentenced to a year in prison with the possibility of serving his sentence at home with an electronic bracelet. An appeals court decided to reduce that sentence by six months, while also awarding the former president a six-month suspended sentence.
It is about the so-called "Bygmalion affair". This is a PR agency that serviced the 2012 election campaign, in which Sarkozy participated as a candidate from the Union for a Popular Movement party. According to the prosecutor's office, the politician spent about €43 million on his campaign in 2012, which is almost double the authorised €22.5 million (France sets strict limits on campaign spending).
To cover up the overspending, the Bygmalion agency issued false invoices for €10m for services to the party's campaign headquarters, but an investigation revealed that these services had not actually been provided. The investigation almost doubled the amount of the overspend.
