Péter Szijjártó, one of Hungary's most prominent politicians, has announced the end of his parliamentary career to take up a senior international management position at Chinese automotive giant BYD. The move highlights the growing ties between Hungary and one of the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturers.
Former Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced that he is resigning from parliament to join BYD, the Chinese automotive company. In a Facebook post, he said he had accepted an offer to take on a senior international position with one of the world's leading corporations.
In his new role, Szijjártó will oversee the group's international relations and the development of new business initiatives. BYD Hungary clarified that he will hold a global position and will not become part of the management of the company's Hungarian subsidiary.
Szijjártó described BYD as one of the automotive industry's greatest success stories of the past two decades and a global leader in new energy vehicles.
The 48-year-old politician has represented Hungary's Fidesz party in parliament since 2002. Since 2014, he served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade after holding several senior positions in Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's administration, where he was responsible for foreign policy and international economic relations.
