About 1,400 French troops were in Niger, with about 1,000 in Niamey and another 400 in the western part of the African country.
The first French troops to leave Niger are on their way to neighbouring Chad. This was announced by the National Council for the Defence of the Fatherland created by the rebels, writes AFP.
"The troops stationed in Western Niger left their base today. It is an operation to send the first land convoy to Chad, accompanied by our defence and security forces," the council said in a statement.
In addition, 97 French special forces, as well as logistical support, left the capital's airport on three flights. The Defence Ministry said the withdrawal of the French contingent would follow "a schedule agreed by both sides".
