From Orbán to Magyar: Hungary's New Leader Reveals Plan for Ukraine, Oil, and the Euro
World
Hungary’s Prime Minister-elect, Péter Magyar, is preparing for the official transfer of power on May 5. At his first major press conference, he declared that the people had voted for a "total regime change" and outlined five strategic priorities aimed at returning Budapest to the forefront of European politics.
Magyar identified the unfreezing of €17 billion in EU funds as his top priority. His "four-point plan" includes joining the European Public Prosecutor's Office, restoring judicial independence, ensuring press freedom, and guaranteeing academic autonomy for universities. These reforms are designed to convince Brussels that the era of corruption is over. Additionally, the leader announced preparations for joining the Eurozone to stabilize the national economy.
Regarding foreign policy, Magyar demonstrates pragmatism with new focal points. He reaffirmed support for Ukraine's territorial integrity, labeling those who demand territorial concessions from Kyiv as "traitors," yet opposed an accelerated path for Ukraine's EU membership. On Russia, the PM expressed readiness for direct dialogue with Putin to seek peace but admitted that Hungary would continue purchasing cheap Russian oil for now, despite plans for full energy independence by 2035. In migration policy, Magyar intends to maintain Orbán's hardline approach, opposing EU refugee redistribution pacts and vowing to strengthen border fences.
