German Intelligence: COVID-19 Originated in a Chinese Laboratory
World
New information regarding the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic has been published by Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service (BND).
According to reports from German newspapers Süddeutsche Zeitung and Zeit on March 12, BND concluded as early as 2020 that the pandemic started due to a leak of the SARS-CoV-2 virus from a laboratory in Wuhan, China. However, the German government chose to keep this information classified.
As part of an investigation commissioned by the Federal Chancellery, BND analyzed open sources and the results of a special operation codenamed "Saaremaa." These materials include data from Chinese scientific institutions, particularly the Wuhan Institute of Virology. The documents contain evidence of risky experiments, artificial modifications of natural viruses, and multiple violations of laboratory safety regulations.
The German government has not provided a clear response to these revelations, stating that it is not standard practice to disclose intelligence data. A government spokesperson added that Bundestag special committees had been informed in confidential meetings. However, neither the Bundestag committee nor the World Health Organization (WHO) had been officially notified.
At the end of last year, the German government decided to have independent experts verify BND’s conclusions. The review is being conducted by a team led by Robert Koch Institute director Lars Schade and Berlin-based virologist Christian Drosten.
Final results have yet to be announced.
