German Woman Travels to Space for the First Time
Technology
29-year-old researcher from Berlin, Rabea Rogge, has become the first German woman to travel to space. She is participating in the private Fram2 mission, launched from Cape Canaveral.
The American space company SpaceX has conducted the first crewed flight over Earth’s polar regions. On the evening of Monday, March 31, the Crew Dragon spacecraft, launched from Cape Canaveral in Florida using a Falcon-9 rocket, entered orbit. The international Fram2 mission consists of four non-professional astronauts, including Berlin-based researcher Rabea Rogge.
The 29-year-old electrical engineering specialist and Arctic robotics expert has become the first German woman in space, nearly five decades after Sigmund Jähn, the first German astronaut, flew in 1978.
The Fram2 mission, initiated and financed by Chun Wang, a cryptocurrency billionaire of Chinese-Maltese origin, is conducting the first-ever flights over the Arctic and Antarctic. Over four days, the crew will remain 425-450 km above Earth, performing more than 20 scientific experiments. These include growing fungi in microgravity and capturing the first-ever X-ray images of the human body in space.
Additionally, mission members will study a polar light-like atmospheric phenomenon called "Steve". Upon returning to Earth, the crew will carry out an experiment by independently exiting the space capsule.
The mission is led by Chun Wang, with other participants including Australian polar region guide Eric Phillips and Norwegian filmmaker and cinematographer Jannicke Mikkelsen, who specializes in filming in extreme environments such as the Arctic, the sea, and space. Mikkelsen also serves as the commander of the space capsule.
The mission is named after the Norwegian research vessel "Fram", built in the late 19th century for Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.
