At a meeting on the development of the textile industry, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev sharply criticized certain entrepreneurs who, lacking sufficient fiber processing capacity, use cheap state resources for cotton speculation.

The sector’s total commercial loan debt stands at $2.2 billion, with 90–95% of the loans denominated in foreign currency. Only 16% of companies hold international quality certificates. “How can enterprises compete on global markets and repay their loans under such conditions?” the president asked.

While each region has 10–15 manufacturers of finished products, cooperation with brands and transition to modern standards remain slow. In Andijan, Namangan, Fergana, Navoi, and Tashkent regions, processing capacities are 2–2.5 times greater than the volume of local raw materials, yet regional investment programs still include yarn projects — a decision criticized by the head of state.

The president also stressed the importance of more active support from Uzbekistan’s diplomatic missions abroad in promoting textile exports.
