A government minister is calling for action, including a ban on TV adverts before 11pm, after a new report revealed the extent of gambling addiction in Germany.

Germany has 4.6 million adults addicted to gambling
Around 1.3 million people in Germany suffer from gambling addiction, with a further 3.3 million people showing early signs of gambling addiction. This is according to a new report presented by the country's Federal Drug Commissioner Burkhard Blinert.

According to the report, based on data collected in 2021, 30 per cent of Germans gamble. That's 55% less than in 2007, but the report still found that 7.7% of adults have financial, social or health problems.

"Gambling rarely makes participants happy," Commissioner Blinert said.

The study found that men and young adults between the ages of 21 and 35 are particularly prone to gambling addiction, as well as those with psychological disorders and high alcohol consumption. Gamblers reportedly lose control of themselves, spend a lot of money on betting, lie to hide their addiction and become isolated from society.
