German Chancellor Friedrich Mertz stated that Berlin is not going to recognize Palestine's statehood either now or at the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly.
On August 26, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed that Germany will not join the international initiative to recognize Palestine as a state. He stated that “the conditions for recognition have not been met, and recent events have not changed Berlin’s position.”
Merz added that Germany will also not support the initiative during the upcoming UN General Assembly session in September.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that Paris would officially recognize Palestine at the UN, stressing the urgent need to end the war in Gaza and provide aid to civilians. Similar announcements were made by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela, and Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney.
