Trump Urges World Leaders to Cut Economic Ties with Iran

US President Donald Trump is calling world leaders and urging them to end economic engagement with Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made the statement as Washington launched a new campaign aimed at intensifying economic pressure on Tehran.
According to Bessent, officials from the US Treasury Department, State Department and military are also holding discussions with counterparts around the world to explain Washington’s position and the actions it expects from other countries.
“The President is making phone calls to world leaders with specific requests to cease their interactions with the regime,” Bessent said. He added that the United States had established timelines for countries to halt activities it had identified as supporting Iran. If those measures are not taken, Washington would act unilaterally under Treasury authorities.
On August 24, the US Treasury announced the launch of Operation Economic Outcast, a broad campaign designed to sever Iran’s international economic connections and further restrict its access to financial resources.
The new measures expand secondary sanctions into sectors including digital assets, technology, gold, aviation and shipping. Washington has also sanctioned nearly 60 entities, individuals and vessels linked, according to the US authorities, to Iranian activities involving sanctions evasion, oil operations and nuclear and missile technology.
Bessent warned that countries and organizations continuing economic engagement with Iran could face restrictions on access to the US financial system. At the same time, he said Washington was giving other countries an opportunity to change their policies before the most severe measures are imposed.
The campaign therefore extends US economic pressure beyond Iran itself to international entities and countries that continue to maintain financial and commercial ties with Tehran.
