Due to a sharp decline in liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from Qatar, European countries may face a gas crisis due to increased attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels from the Ansar Allah group, according to the Associated Press.

In January 2024, about 70% of LNG deliveries from Qatar to a major terminal in Italy were cancelled due to missile attacks on merchant ships and tankers. In 2023, the share of Middle Eastern fuel in the Italian energy market was 40 per cent, analysts said.

LNG supply problems could impact many EU countries. For European countries, LNG is an important source for industrial plants and is also used to generate electricity and heat buildings. Experts warn that increased conflict in the Middle East could pose serious threats to the energy security of the entire European region.
