Hungary takes over EU presidency
World
Hungary took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union for the next six months on 1 July.
From July to December, Hungarian diplomats will chair key meetings in Brussels and shape the EU's political agenda.
Earlier, Budapest published plans for its presidency under the slogan “Make Europe Great Again”, echoing the famous campaign slogan of former US President Donald Trump in 2016, who is now trying to return to the White House again.
Hungary often remains in opposition in Brussels on various European policy issues. The country has also been criticised within the EU for not fully meeting the standards of the rule of law, leading to serious discussions last year of stripping Hungary of its right to chair the EU Council.
The presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates from one of the 27 member states to another every six months. The country holding the presidency leads its day-to-day work and represents all member states in negotiations with other EU institutions.
