Hungary Wants to Halt EU Sanctions Against Russia
On February 25, Tuesday, the Reuters agency, citing European diplomatic sources, reported that Hungary is pushing for the removal of eight individuals from the EU’s sanctions list against Russia.

The Reuters source did not disclose the names of the individuals Hungary wants to remove from the list. Additionally, it was noted that Budapest also seeks "new guarantees" regarding the transit of gas through Ukraine to Europe before agreeing to extend the EU’s sanctions against Russia.

Sanctions imposed due to Russia’s military conflict with Ukraine must be renewed every six months through a unanimous vote by all EU countries. According to Reuters, Budapest has previously used the sanctions renewal process as a bargaining tool for its own interests.

Sanctions against Russia fall into two categories, each with its own renewal period:

Economic restrictions

A list of 2,400 individuals and legal entities, whose assets are frozen within the EU. Additionally, these individuals are banned from entering the EU.

Sanctions against a large group of Russian individuals and entities are set to expire on March 15. According to EU regulations, a decision on their extension must be made by March 10.

Hungary is pushing for negotiations on resuming the transit of Russian gas to Central Europe, maintaining Russian oil supplies via the "Druzhba" pipeline, and ensuring the security of the "TurkStream" gas pipeline, which delivers Russian fuel to Hungary.

These demands could directly impact Hungary’s decision regarding the extension of EU sanctions against Russia.
