In India, at least 85 people have died in the past day due to the heatwave gripping the northern and eastern parts of the country. According to TASS citing the Hindustan Times newspaper, the heat-related fatalities have been recorded in the states of Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.

The highest number of casualties has been reported in Odisha, where the high temperatures are compounded by high humidity. In this state on the eastern coast of India, 46 heatwave-related deaths have been recorded, with several dozen people hospitalized. Local authorities have instructed to reserve six beds in each hospital for the treatment of those affected by the heat and related issues.

In Bihar, there are at least 16 casualties, with dozens hospitalized. 15 people have died in Uttar Pradesh, while 4 heat-related deaths have been reported in Jharkhand and Rajasthan each.

Authorities note that among the victims are many election commission workers who were preparing polling stations for voting. India is holding the final stage of its general parliamentary elections on Saturday.
