China's population decline was first observed in 2022, when the population decreased by 850,000 people. In 2023, this number increased to 2.08 million. In 2024, this trend continued. In 2024, China's population decreased by 1.39 million, bringing the total population to 1.408 billion.

In the last three years, China's population has decreased by millions
In 2024, 9.54 million babies were born, while 10.93 million people passed away. The birth rate was 6.77 per thousand people, and the death rate was 7.76 per thousand. This data was provided by the National Bureau of Statistics of the People's Republic of China.

In terms of gender composition, the male population stood at 719.09 million, while the female population was 689.19 million. Although the male population decreased by 0.1%, there was no significant change in the female population. The working-age population (16-59 years) was 857.98 million, accounting for 60.9% of the total population. This figure has decreased by 0.4 percentage points compared to 2023. Additionally, the population aged 65 and over reached 220.23 million, an increase of 1.6%.

Several factors are contributing to this decline:

Decrease in Birth Rates: Younger generations are less inclined to have children, which has prompted the Chinese government to promote a "new birth culture."

Aging Process: The proportion of elderly people is increasing, while the percentage of the working-age population is decreasing. This may have a negative impact on economic growth.

Urban-Rural Disparities: The process of urbanization has led to the depopulation of rural areas and the weakening of industrial sectors.

The population decline is becoming a concern for the Chinese government. Officials are promoting various initiatives to encourage young families to have children. For instance, local authorities in Miyun district, Beijing, have set up special promotional groups for family planning.
