On August 8, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a law aimed at strengthening intellectual property protection in the country.

Intellectual property protection strengthened in Uzbekistan
The key change is the introduction of criminal responsibility for the illegal use of trademarks and other serious infringements of property rights, including software, inventions, and industrial designs. The amendments will take effect three months after their official publication.

Administrative fines for violations of copyright and related rights will also be increased. For the first time, liability will be imposed for infringements of plant variety achievements and integrated circuit topologies. Justice authorities will be empowered to inspect, seize, and destroy counterfeit goods.

The law also simplifies the registration process for intellectual property rights: protective documents will be assigned a single QR code for quick verification, the list of required documents will be reduced, and application review periods will be shortened — to 10 days for software and database applications and one month for geographical indication examinations.

In addition, applicants will be allowed to extend the state fee payment period from three to six months by paying an additional 50% of the set amount.
