On January 8, 2025, Italian journalist Cecilia Sala was released from Iran's Evin prison and returned home. Sala had been arrested on December 19, 2024, in Iran on charges of violating Islamic laws. She had spent nearly three weeks in solitary confinement.
29-year-old Cecilia Sala is a journalist for Il Foglio newspaper. She was arrested three days after arriving in Iran on a journalist visa. The Iranian government charged her with "violating the laws of the Islamic Republic."
During her time in Evin prison, Sala emphasized the harsh conditions she endured. She mentioned that she slept in her cell without a pillow or bedding. Evin prison holds political opposition members, journalists, and those persecuted for their religious beliefs.
Diplomatic efforts led by Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani resulted in Sala's swift release. Italian politicians, especially Tajani, emphasized that "everyone worked together from the beginning" and highly praised the country's diplomatic strength.
