Nineteen-year-old Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov claimed a historic victory at the Chess World Cup in Goa, India, becoming the youngest champion in the tournament’s history and securing a place in the 2026 Candidates Tournament.

Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has won the Chess World Cup, which concluded on 26 November in Goa, India. At 19, he becomes the youngest champion of the tournament and secures qualification for the 2026 Candidates Tournament.

In the final, Sindarov defeated Chinese grandmaster Wei Yi. The two classical games ended in draws, as did the first rapid game. In the decisive second rapid game, Sindarov, playing Black, secured the winning point.

Both finalists — Sindarov and Wei Yi — earned spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament. Sindarov will receive $120,000 in prize money.

In the match for third place, Russia’s Andrey Esipenko defeated Uzbekistan’s Nodirbek Yakubboev and also qualified for the Candidates.

Javokhir Sindarov is among the youngest grandmasters in the world. In 2022, he won the Chess Olympiad as part of the Uzbekistan national team. His opponent, 26-year-old Wei Yi, was part of China’s gold-winning team at the 2014 Olympiad.
