Uzbekistan is scaling up measures to combat desertification and land degradation. During a meeting of the Parliamentary Commission led by Tanzila Narbayeva, key environmental achievements were discussed, ranging from forestation of the Aral Sea bed to extensive land reclamation in the Surkhandarya region.

Over the past year, the country's environmental situation has stabilized thanks to the creation of forest plantations covering 220,000 hectares. Particular attention was paid to the Aral Sea region, where "green coverings" spanning 253,000 hectares were established on the dried seabed. Additionally, "green gardens" are being actively developed in cities and districts across the republic to protect soil from erosion.

The commission conducted a detailed review of the Surkhandarya region, where 39 million saplings were cultivated under the "Yashil Makon" national project. In the Kattakum sandy massif, over 4,000 hectares were sown with saxaul. Alongside reforestation, irrigation efforts are underway: the repair of thousands of kilometers of collector networks has successfully reduced the area of saline lands in the region.

Despite these successes, the Parliamentary Commission highlighted the need to accelerate efforts to protect agricultural lands from water and wind erosion. Following the meeting, a "roadmap" was adopted, assigning specific tasks to ministries for biodiversity conservation and the rational use of forest resources.
