Gaza becoming 'graveyard for children', says Guterres
World
A child dies every 10 minutes in Gaza, according to the UN. The UN Middle East agency has called for the protection of civilians during the conflict.
In the Gaza Strip, Israeli strikes kill one child and injure two others every 10 minutes. This follows data from the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The agency has called for the protection of civilians during the conflict. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, in turn, said at a briefing for journalists that "Gaza is becoming a graveyard for children."
According to the head of the world organisation, "hundreds of girls and boys are reportedly being killed or injured every day" in the Palestinian enclave.
Guterres said the UN and the organisation's humanitarian partners have launched a $1.2 billion humanitarian appeal to help 2.7 million people - the entire population of the Gaza Strip and half a million Palestinians in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Israeli-Palestinian conflict
On the morning of 7 October, the militant wing of Hamas, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, announced the launch of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood against Israel. Thousands of rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip towards Israel, armed groups entered Israeli settlements.
Hamas said the operation was in response to the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem and the escalation of violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians.
In response, the Israeli army announced the launch of Operation Iron Swords against Hamas in the Gaza Strip with dozens of fighter jets, which turned into a massacre of Gazans.
The number of people killed by Israeli attacks has exceeded 10,000. Since 7 October, more than 4,000 children and more than 2,600 women have been killed in Israeli attacks on the exclave. In addition, more than 25,000 Gazans have been injured.
2.3 million Gazans are suffering from food, water and medicine shortages due to massive Israeli aerial, land and sea bombardments and the complete blockade of the exclave.
