Apple becomes world's largest smartphone maker in 2023
From 2011 to 2022, South Korea's Samsung Electronics held the position of the largest smartphone vendor, but Apple managed to take that position in 2023.

In 2023, smartphone shipments fell by 3.2 per cent to 1.17 billion units, the lowest in a decade. This was fuelled by macroeconomic issues and excess inventory at the beginning of the year. However, the fourth quarter saw steady growth of 8.5 per cent to 326.1 million devices, exceeding initial forecasts of 7.3 per cent.

Samsung with a market share of 19.4% was slightly behind the leader, but its sales volumes decreased by 13.6% year-on-year. According to IDC, the Korean giant's position was squeezed not only by Apple, as the Android smartphone segment is now undergoing active diversification. Huawei is gaining popularity in China, and interesting devices are also presented by OnePlus, Honor and Google brands.

Transsion ranked fifth in the global smartphone market at the end of the year, showing the highest growth rate at 30.8%. Its share was 8.1%, which is close to OPPO's position (8.8%). Chinese holding company Transsion produces smartphones under the Tecno, Infinix and Itel brands, as well as accessories under the Oraimo brand. For a company founded in 2006, the fifth place in the competitive smartphone market at the end of last year is a very significant achievement.
