Laureates of the UNESCO-Uzbekistan Beruni Prize have been announced in Samarkand
Established under the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to commemorate the 1050th anniversary of the great scholar Abu Rayhon Beruniy, the award promotes research in ethical and socially responsible technology development.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay stated:

“In a world transformed by fast-evolving technologies, we need an ethical compass — not as a brake, but as a guiding star ensuring innovation serves the common good.”

Gayane Umerova, Chairperson of the National Commission of Uzbekistan for UNESCO, noted:

“Samarkand has always been a beacon of human curiosity. The Beruniy Prize reminds us that knowledge must walk hand in hand with responsibility.”

The laureates include:

Professor Virgílio Augusto Fernandes de Almeida (Brazil) — for advancing inclusive, human-centered approaches to AI governance.

Professors Susan Perry and Claudia Roda (France) — for pioneering a youth-oriented “anticipatory ethics” model connecting education, research, and social engagement.

The Institute for AI International Governance at Tsinghua University (China) — for impactful academic and policy work in ethical AI governance.

The winners were selected by an independent jury appointed by the UNESCO Director-General. A special issue of The UNESCO Courier was published, dedicated to Beruniy’s scientific heritage and its enduring relevance.
