Macron Confirms Plan to Double France's Defense Budget

France is preparing to significantly strengthen its defense capabilities, as President Emmanuel Macron confirmed plans to double the country's defense budget by the end of his second presidential term.
In his traditional address to the armed forces ahead of Bastille Day, Macron said that increasing defense spending remains one of the government's key priorities. He stressed that France and its European allies are ready to defend freedom, international law, and security amid growing global threats.
The French president noted that Europe is entering a new era in which defense and security have become increasingly important due to ongoing armed conflicts on the continent. He emphasized the need to reinforce both France's national defense and Europe's collective security capabilities.
France's defense budget increased from €47.2 billion in 2024 to €50.5 billion in 2025 and is expected to reach €54.4 billion in 2026. If the announced strategy is implemented, the country's annual defense spending is projected to exceed €100 billion by 2032.
