The officials did not appeal directly to the US president in the hope that he would make the decision himself, but their patience is running out, CNN reports.

Many Democrats believe that Biden should withdraw from the election race
CNN's discussions with over two dozen current and former Democratic officials, donors, and longtime Biden allies, all speaking anonymously to avoid straining relations with the president, reveal a mounting consensus that Biden should exit the race promptly. Many believe he should make this announcement within the week.

Initial hopes that pressure from Biden's family might prompt him to reconsider were dashed during a retreat at Camp David on Sunday, where family members reportedly rallied around his decision to continue despite the debate setback, placing blame on campaign staff.

"One word you know about Biden: stubborn," remarked a senior Democratic official who has previously supported Biden publicly but now privately supports his withdrawal.

"He might have weathered this storm if it were an isolated incident. But it’s not," commented a senior Capitol Hill Democratic official.

Illinois Representative Mike Quigley, speaking on "CNN This Morning," underscored the broader implications of Biden's decision: "He needs to grasp that his choice not only affects who will occupy the White House for the next four years but also influences Senate and House outcomes, with ramifications for decades."

Many prominent Democrats doubt Biden's ability to meet those challenges, pointing to his limited public appearances since Sunday as a sign of their concerns. Comparing his record, Biden has held 36 news conferences since taking office, whereas his predecessors, including Trump, Obama, and Bush, had held significantly more at this point in their presidencies.

The next US presidential election is scheduled for 5 November 2024. The election will be the 60th presidential election in the country's history.
