Mark Carney to Become Canada’s New Prime Minister
Political
In Canada, Mark Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of England, has been elected as the new leader of the ruling Liberal Party. He will replace Justin Trudeau, who resigned in January.
In the March 9 vote on Sunday, Carney secured 86% of the votes, defeating former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Leader of the Government in the House of Commons Karina Gould, and businessman Frank Baylis.
Carney advocates for closer economic cooperation with Europe and Asia. He believes that this would help reduce Canada's economic dependence on the United States, especially as U.S. President Donald Trump has imposed a 25% tariff on Canadian imports and is challenging the country’s sovereignty.
Additionally, the new Liberal Party leader has promised economic reforms, including tax cuts for the middle class, reducing bureaucracy, and actively encouraging innovation and investment, according to the DPA news agency.
In his farewell speech to the Liberal Party, incumbent Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada is currently facing an "existential threat" from the United States.
Trudeau announced his resignation as Prime Minister and Liberal Party leader on January 6. He said: "This country deserves a real choice in the next election, but if I have to engage in internal battles, I cannot be the best option". He also announced that Parliament will be suspended until March 24.
Justin Trudeau led the Liberal Party for nearly 12 years and has served as Canada’s Prime Minister since November 2015. However, in recent years, his popularity has declined sharply due to a series of reforms, rising prices, a housing crisis, and immigration issues.
