Mass Protests Erupt in Venezuela Against Maduro
World
Following the announcement of presidential election results, which saw Nicolás Maduro elected for a third term, mass protests have erupted in Venezuela.
Protesters are blocking roads, throwing Molotov cocktails, and toppling statues of Hugo Chávez. The protests have spread to several major cities, including Caracas and Maracay, where police have used tear gas.
According to the Venezuelan Observatory of Conflicts, there have been 187 protests recorded across 20 states. The opposition claims widespread election fraud and asserts that their candidate, Edmundo González, received more votes than Maduro. Independent exit polls also show a lead for González.
In response to several countries, including Argentina and Peru, refusing to recognize the election results, Venezuela is recalling its diplomats.
