Merz Calls Russia a European Country, Hopes for Renewed Relations
World
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has described Russia as a European country and expressed hope for restoring a balance in relations with Moscow in the long term. He made the remarks at a New Year’s reception at the Halle–Dessau Chamber of Commerce, as reported by Die Welt.
According to Merz, achieving peace and freedom in Europe requires finding a compromise with “the largest European neighbor — Russia.” He added that if relations are normalized, both the European Union and Germany will be able to look beyond 2026 with confidence, viewing this process as another major test for Europe.
