According to parliamentary speaker Igor Grosu, Chisinau should take advantage of the window of opportunity.
Moldova may finalise the negotiations on joining the European Union before the 2030 deadline set by the country's President Maia Sandu. This opinion was voiced by Igor Grosu, chairman of the parliament and the ruling Action and Solidarity Party, in an interview with the Rlive TV channel.
"It is very important to have a referendum this year, to put a stop to this dispute and start the negotiation process on all fumes. We should not be orientated towards 2030. I think we have the opportunity and the obligation to do everything to bring the moment of accession to the EU even closer. I feel the same attitude on the part of my Ukrainian colleagues," Grosu said.
According to him, the republic should take advantage of the window of opportunity. Grosu believes that the negotiation process with regard to Moldova and Ukraine will be conducted "not according to the previously used template".
In December 2023, the European Council decided to start accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova. Sandu proposed holding a referendum on the issue and combining it with the presidential election in November 2024.
