Kenyan police put up roadblocks on streets leading to the presidential palace ahead of calls for protests, Al Jazeera reports.

More protests expected in Kenya
Developments come a day after President Ruto made a dramatic U-turn and withdrew contentious tax hikes.

Deadly protests were sparked last week by the 2024 finance bill as the initially peaceful rallies gathered momentum across the country.

On Tuesday, Parliament was partly set ablaze and at least 22 people were reported killed across the country. On Wednesday, Ruto said he would not sign the bill, and “it shall subsequently be withdrawn”.

Washington has listed Kenya as one of its key allies. Currently, "key US allies outside NATO" are 20 countries, including Israel, Egypt, Argentina, Pakistan, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Qatar.
