Multi-Day Protests in Albania Turn Into Anti-Elite March

Albania has been engulfed in a sweeping political crisis as mass environmental protests have rapidly escalated into a nationwide anti-elite movement demanding the complete resignation of the current government. For the tenth consecutive day, thousands of demonstrators have paralyzed the capital's center, marching from Skanderbeg Square to the parliament building. The protesters are voicing stark distrust in both Prime Minister Edi Rama's ruling party and the official opposition led by Sali Berisha, accusing the entire political establishment of failing to resolve the country's deep economic problems.
The trigger for the widespread public outrage was the government's plan to hand over protected coastal zones in the Narta Lagoon and the uninhabited island of Sazan for luxury resort development by entities linked to Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law. Protesters have issued five ultimatum demands to the authorities, including the repeal of laws granting special status to strategic investors and a revision of amendments regarding protected territories. Against this backdrop, PM Edi Rama claimed that the protests are being fueled from abroad by hostile forces utilizing bots. However, Brussels has already intervened: European Commission spokesperson Guillaume Mercier sternly urged Tirana not to violate EU environmental standards, stating that developing nature reserves poses a direct threat to Albania's bid to join the European Union. The rally organizers, who timed the latest wave of actions to coincide with the historic anniversary of the Prizren League, declare that they intend to stand their ground until the end.
