NATO Tests Next-Generation Stratospheric Technologies Over Poland

Poland is set to host tests of American high-altitude micro balloons as part of a joint US-NATO program aimed at advancing technologies for future multi-domain military operations. Military officials say the mission is research-oriented and focused on evaluating next-generation communication, surveillance and data-sharing capabilities.

According to the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces, flights of the Micro High-Altitude Balloons (Micro-HAB) will take place between late July and early August. These unmanned platforms operate in the stratosphere and are capable of supporting reconnaissance, monitoring and communications missions.
The tests form part of preparations by the US Army's Multi-Domain Command in Europe and are intended to strengthen interoperability among NATO allies. The Multi-Domain Operations (MDO) concept integrates land, air, naval, space and cyber forces into a unified operational framework for faster decision-making and coordinated responses.
In addition to military applications, such platforms are widely used for atmospheric and climate research, telecommunications testing and space technology experiments. Similar systems were previously deployed during the multinational Arcane Thunder 26 exercise in Poland, Germany and the United States, as well as during trials in the Baltic region.
Polish military authorities stressed that the flights pose no threat to the public. However, residents have been advised not to touch any debris if discovered and to report it to the relevant authorities, as the platforms may contain electronic equipment and power systems requiring specialized handling.
