Eli Feldstein, an aide to Benjamin Netanyahu, was charged last week with endangering state security as part of a case involving leaked classified documents.
Feldstein, who worked closely with Netanyahu over the past year and is the main suspect in the case, is accused of transferring classified information with the intent to harm the state, unlawful possession of classified material, and obstruction of justice. These charges could result in a life sentence.
A second suspect, an IDF reservist whose name has not been disclosed, is charged with transferring classified information, which carries a maximum sentence of seven years.
Netanyahu himself is not a suspect in the case. According to the court, Feldstein and the reservist allegedly leaked a classified document to Bild that detailed Hamas's policy on hostage negotiations.
The reservist reportedly removed the document illegally from the IDF's military intelligence database and passed it to Feldstein, who then forwarded it to Bild.
The allegations suggest that the leak could have severely compromised Israel's security.
It is believed Feldstein acted to reduce public criticism of Netanyahu following the murder of hostages by Hamas and to improve Netanyahu's image. This was reported by The Times of Israel.
