Neuralink has successfully implanted a chip in its second patient, announced the company's founder, Elon Musk. According to him, the second implant procedure went very well. The company plans to implant chips in 10 patients this year.
In a podcast with scientist Lex Fridman, Elon Musk stated: "Everything went very well with the second implant. There’s a good signal, lots of electrodes." Musk added that the company aims to implant chips in 10 patients in 2024.
Details of the operation were not disclosed. In June, the patient initially scheduled to receive the second Neuralink chip declined the procedure for medical reasons, leading to its postponement.
Neuralink also announced its efforts to restore limb functions in people with paralysis by implanting electrodes in the spinal cord. Chief surgeon Matthew MacDougall mentioned in the podcast that the company has made significant progress, having successfully tested the implants on animals.
In January, Neuralink successfully implanted its first neurochip, enabling control of electronic devices through thought. The first patient, Nolan Arbo, who was paralyzed below the shoulders eight years ago, learned to control a computer cursor using the chip.
