New York City will make drivers pay for traffic jams
New York may become the first city in the US to make drivers pay for traffic jams. This is reported by The New York Times.
It is planned to introduce a fee for entering the centre of Manhattan district, the main part of which is Times Square, and one of the most popular areas is Soho.
It is reported that the money raised will be used to fund public transport. Car drivers are expected to pay $15, truck drivers $24 or $36 depending on size, and motorbike drivers $7.50. The entrance fee will be charged once per day. Taxis and public transport, meanwhile, will not pay the fee and will increase their fares.
The tolls will be valid from 5:00 to 21:00 local time on weekdays and from 9:00 to 21:00 on weekends. Electronic sensors will be placed at entrances and exits from the toll zone, on poles, road signs and bridges to monitor vehicles.
According to the publication, the idea of introducing such tolls in New York has been opposed by drivers and officials for many years.
