Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus has been appointed as the head of Bangladesh's interim government. His nomination was strongly supported by protestors.
On August 6, the Dhaka Tribune reported that economist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus will head the interim government of Bangladesh. This announcement came from the office of President Shahabuddin Chuppu.
The decision to appoint the 84-year-old Yunus was made during a meeting between the President and leaders of the "Students Against Discrimination" movement, who insisted on Yunus's nomination. The final composition of the interim government will be determined after consultations with political parties in Bangladesh.
The President announced the dissolution of parliament to form the interim government. Earlier, on August 5, former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who had been in office since 2009, left the country amid weeks of protests.
Around 300 people were killed during the protests, including 109 who died in the mass unrest on August 5.
