Oliy Majlis Approves New Bill "On Veterans"
Uzbekistan
The Parliament of Uzbekistan has taken a significant step toward systematizing state support for citizens who have dedicated decades to diligent labor. On May 5, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis approved the draft law "On Veterans" in its first reading. The document is designed not only to formalize the honorary status but also to establish a robust legal foundation for providing a wide range of benefits—from medical services to substantial discounts on utility bills.
A new system of legal and social protection for citizens with long-term work experience is taking shape in Uzbekistan. During a regular session of the lower house of parliament, deputies conceptually approved the "On Veterans" bill, which clearly defines the categories of individuals eligible for this status and specifies the powers of state agencies in providing support. According to the document, veteran status will be granted to those who have made exemplary contributions to the development of their industries over many years and have earned public recognition.
A key section of the bill focuses on specific social guarantees. For the first time at the legislative level, the right of veterans to free treatment in sanatorium-resort and health facilities is being established, along with preferential access to necessary medications during outpatient treatment. The social package is augmented by compensation payments for housing and communal services, as well as special pension and tax incentives, which are expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on retired professionals.
Special attention is paid to the quality of life for veterans and their engagement in the cultural sphere. The bill provides for discounts and benefits when visiting theaters, museums, sports facilities, and cultural heritage sites. Following active discussions, deputies agreed that the adoption of this law would eliminate bureaucratic inconsistencies and make the social support system more transparent and targeted. The document will now undergo further discussion stages before attaining the force of law and becoming the cornerstone of a new national policy of recognition.
