Telegram founder Pavel Durov informed French investigators that his annual income amounts to just 1 dirham (about 3500 soums). This revelation surprised law enforcement, as Forbes estimates Durov’s net worth at $15.5 billion.

Initially, Paris prosecutors set Durov's bail at €20 million, but after learning of his modest salary, the court reduced the amount to €5 million. This decision raised questions about Durov’s finances and how his enormous wealth aligns with such a small income.

Durov was arrested in late August, suspected of personal responsibility for third-party actions on Telegram. A few days later, he was released on bail, with the condition that he remain in France until the investigation is completed.

In March, Durov stated in an interview that Telegram is not yet profitable, even though the total value of his shares in the company is estimated at $30 billion. This has sparked discussions about his unconventional business strategy.

Durov's case is reminiscent of other billionaires like Elon Musk, who once earned almost nothing from Tesla. Musk tied his compensation to company performance, and despite not having a guaranteed salary, he became the highest-paid CEO in the U.S., earning about $11 billion in 2020 through stock options.
