Pentagon Chief Dismisses U.S. Representative to NATO
World
Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has dismissed Shoshana Chatfield, the United States’ military representative to NATO and the only woman in NATO’s Military Committee. According to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, the decision, announced on April 8, was due to a loss of confidence in her leadership abilities.
Shoshana Chatfield was one of the few female three-star officers (vice admirals) in the U.S. Navy.
She thus became the latest senior military officer to be dismissed as part of President Donald Trump’s broad personnel changes at the Pentagon.
Chatfield is also the third female military commander to be removed from office following Trump’s return to the White House. She had served as the U.S. military representative to NATO since 2023.
In February, Trump unexpectedly dismissed General Charles Brown, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, along with five other admirals and generals—breaking the longstanding tradition in which incoming U.S. presidents typically retain senior military leaders appointed by previous administrations.
Additionally, at the end of February, Defense Secretary Hegseth dismissed Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations; General Jim Slife, Vice Chief of Staff of the Air Force; and three top military legal officers. The day after his January inauguration, Trump also removed Admiral Linda Fagan, the head of the U.S. Coast Guard.
