Putin Says Peace in Ukraine Remains Possible as Contacts with Kyiv Continue
World
Russian President Vladimir Putin said a peaceful settlement to the war in Ukraine remains possible. He said Russia and Ukraine should reach an agreement first, while other countries, including the United States and China, could support the parties.
Speaking at the plenary session of the Eastern Economic Forum, Putin answered yes when asked whether there was a chance for a peaceful settlement. “Is there a chance? Yes, in my view there is,” he said, adding that the main decision should be taken by the countries directly involved in the conflict.
Putin also said Russia maintains contacts with Ukraine, primarily through the countries’ security services. According to him, those contacts remain active.
The Russian president linked the prospects for dialogue to the broader situation surrounding the fighting and recent statements from Kyiv. He said that threats involving civilian aviation make the prospects for bilateral peace negotiations more difficult.
Russia has previously said it remains prepared to pursue political and diplomatic contacts over Ukraine, while also linking an end to hostilities to achieving the objectives stated by Moscow.
