The first such visit took place in July 2000. After his visit to North Korea, Putin will travel to Vietnam, which will be his first visit to this Asian country in seven years.

Putin's aide Yuri Ushakov said at a briefing with reporters on 17 June that both visits are planned as two-day trips, but the bulk of the activities will take place on the second day.

The Russian President will arrive in North Korea late in the evening of 18 June. The official welcoming ceremony for the Russian delegation and subsequent transfer to the residence of North Korean State Council Chairman Kim Jong Un will take place in the afternoon of 19 June. The talks between Russia and North Korea will be held in both a narrow and an extended format. According to Ushakov, the most important and sensitive issues will be discussed during a long informal dialogue between the leaders, similar to the talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during a walk around the residence and during a tea party.
