SCO Foreign Ministers Shape Agenda for Anniversary Summit in Bishkek

Foreign ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member states gathered in Cholpon-Ata to finalize preparations for the SCO Summit, scheduled to take place in Bishkek from 30 August to 1 September 2026. Marking the organization's 25th anniversary, the meeting focused on security, economic cooperation and a package of strategic documents to be submitted to heads of state.
Held under Kyrgyzstan's SCO chairmanship with the theme "25 Years of the SCO: Together Towards Sustainable Peace, Development and Prosperity," the meeting brought together foreign ministers from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, India, Iran, Pakistan, Belarus, Russia and other member states.
The ministers reviewed key international and regional issues, prospects for expanding multifaceted cooperation and preparations for decisions expected to be adopted at the upcoming summit. Priority areas included strengthening peace, security and stability, expanding trade and economic ties, enhancing transport connectivity and deepening humanitarian cooperation.
President of the Kyrgyz Republic Sadyr Japarov received the foreign ministers participating in the meeting. He stressed that terrorism, extremism, illicit drug trafficking and transnational organized crime require coordinated international responses, noting that no country can effectively address such complex challenges alone. He also called for accelerating the establishment of a universal security center based on the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure and emphasized the importance of expanding trade, transport links and joint investment projects.
Uzbek Foreign Minister Bakhtiyor Saidov said the delegation conveyed the warm greetings of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev to President Sadyr Japarov. He highly praised Kyrgyzstan's preparations for the anniversary summit and reaffirmed Uzbekistan's active participation in meetings, conferences and other activities across all SCO institutions.
SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev announced that heads of state will consider a package of anniversary documents, including a declaration on strengthening multilateral partnership for nuclear security, a cooperation program on combating drug addiction through 2030, measures against the spread of synthetic drugs and their precursors, and a plan on international information security.
Additional documents will address cooperation in transport, artificial intelligence, digital technologies, energy, environmental protection, healthcare, education, tourism and emergency response, while leaders are also expected to consider establishing cooperation between the SCO Secretariat and the African Union.
